The Pinnacle Walk is one of the most iconic hiking experiences in Victoria’s Grampians National Park.
With stunning panoramic views, rocky canyons, and serene fern-filled bushland, this Grampians hike is a must-do.
The trail takes you along Stony Creek, where you’ll see the beautiful Venus Baths waterholes, and wraps up with unforgettable summit views at the Pinnacle Lookout.
From starting points to top highlights, here’s everything to help you plan your trek to the Pinnacle summit.
How To Get To Pinnacle Lookout
There are 3 ways to reach the Pinnacle Lookout, each offering a unique experience:
1. Pinnacle Walk from Sundial Car Park
The Sundial route is one of the easier approaches, ideal for families or those looking for a shorter hike.
- Distance: 4km return
- Elevation gain: 136m
- Difficulty: Easy / Medium
2. Pinnacle Walk from Wonderland Car Park
The Wonderland route, while slightly more challenging, takes you through amazing rock formations of Grand Canyon and Silent Street.
- Distance: 4km return
- Elevation gain: 280m
- Difficulty: Medium
3. Pinnacle Walk from Halls Gap
Starting the trail at Halls Gap offers the longest and most scenic route and it can be done as a loop walk. It’s a great option for those seeking a challenging yet rewarding hike.
- Distance: 10km loop
- Elevation gain: +500m
- Difficulty: Medium / Hard
Since this is the route I chose and highly recommend, I’m going to walk you through all the highlights of this trail, starting from Halls Gap.
Below is a map showcasing all the different routes to the Pinnacle summit:

Halls Gap to The Pinnacle: Trail Overview
The walk begins right behind the Halls Gap Caravan Park Reserve, where the trail takes you on a scenic 10km loop through the heart of the Central Grampians.
This route covers about 500m of elevation gain, making it a moderate challenge for most hikers.
It’s a good idea to allow at least half a day for this hike, ensuring you have enough time to fully appreciate the views and take some rest stops.

The terrain varies throughout the hike, keeping things exciting. You’ll start in forested areas, before gradually ascending through rocky outcrops and narrow canyons that open up to stunning views.

Halls Gap to Venus Baths
Your first stop along the Pinnacle Walk is the Venus Baths, located just 1.3 km from the Halls Gap trailhead.
The relatively easy walk to this point follows Stony Creek and is shaded by lush vegetation and beautiful rock formations, creating a peaceful start to the hike.
The Venus Baths are a series of shallow rock pools carved out by the creek, offering a perfect spot to relax and cool your feet in the water.
It’s a refreshing oasis, particularly during warmer months, and provides a tranquil setting to take a break before continuing on the more strenuous parts of the trail.

Splitters Falls: A Seasonal Gem
About 1.2 km past the Venus Baths, you’ll get a chance to take a short side trail to Splitters Falls, a charming seasonal waterfall that adds an extra touch of beauty to the hike.
The waterfall flows after periods of significant rain, creating a gentle cascade that feeds into the surrounding ferns and moss-covered rocks.
I visited the Grampians during the dry period of time, but even then, the rugged beauty of the rocky outcrop and narrow gorge surrounding Splitters Falls still made it a worthwhile stop for exploration.

Grand Canyon
After leaving Splitters Falls, the trail becomes steeper as it leads you to one of the Grampians’ most impressive natural wonders—the Grand Canyon.
The rock walls of the canyon are layered in a way that reveals the ancient history of the landscape, offering a visual treat for geology enthusiasts.
The canyon floor is a mix of large, weathered boulders and smaller stones, making for an adventurous scramble in some places.

As you near the end of the canyon, be aware that usual shortcut to the Pinnacle is currently blocked.
Due to this, you’ll need to retrace your steps toward Wonderland Carpark, making a slight detour and adding approximately 1 km to the total distance of the hike.

Silent Street
After finishing your exploration of the Grand Canyon, prepare for what is arguably the most challenging section of the trail, with a significant elevation gain ahead.
On the way, you can explore rock caves like Cool Chamber and Echo Cave, adding a bit of adventure before you reach Silent Street.
This narrow rock corridor is so enclosed that it feels like stepping into a secret part of the Grampians.

The name “Silent Street” fits perfectly—you’ll likely be silent yourself, catching your breath as you tackle the steep ascent toward the summit.

Reaching The Pinnacle Lookout
After navigating through the narrow passage of Silent Street, you’ll finally reach the Pinnacle Lookout, which rewards your efforts with some of the most iconic views in Victoria.
From the summit, you can take in the stunning expanse of Halls Gap, with Lake Bellfield shimmering to the south and the endless plains stretching far beyond.
The fenced platform provides a perfect spot to rest and admire this amazing view.

Just around the corner from the Pinnacle Lookout, there’s a spot where you can catch the best view of Relph Peak, with Halls Gap stretching out in the valley beneath it.

Pinnacle Lookout to Halls Gap Return
The return journey takes you along the eastern part of the loop, offering new perspectives and a quieter, more reflective atmosphere.
As you begin to descend, expansive views of Halls Gap start to open up, with Boronia Peak standing tall on the other side of the valley.
The lower section is filled with intriguing rock formations and colorful cliffs that make this stretch of the trail even more captivating.

The Pinnacle Walk: Trail Summary
There’s no doubt that the Pinnacle Walk is one of the most rewarding hikes in Grampians.
The iconic views from the summit, the rocky canyons, fern-filled forests, and the serene waterholes of Venus Baths are just a few reasons why the Pinnacle Walk should be on your trekking bucket list.
It’s a trail that showcases the best of what the Grampians has to offer, and the exhilaration of standing atop the Pinnacle Lookout will stay with you long after the hike is over.
