Finding the Parking and Trailhead

The initial hurdle? Finding a parking spot.

There’s a small parking area near the locked gate at the start of the Clover Hill Trail, but it fills up quickly because there are only about 8-10 spots.

So, it’s better to come early, especially on busy days.

Remember, no parking is allowed along the Illawarra Highway, but there’s more parking a bit further down the road.

For the car park location, you can check this link: Clover Hill Trail Car Park.

Clover Hill Trail Map

Let’s take a quick look at the map of the trail.

I’ve marked the locations of all 3 waterfalls, making it easier for you to find them during your hike.

Getting Started on the Clover Trail

The hike kicks off with a pleasant walk along Clover Hill Road, an old fire trail that’s pretty wide and easy to follow. A serene stream tags along, adding to the peaceful vibes as you stroll through the greenery.

Along the way, those old stone bridges whisper tales from bygone days when these routes were bustling with travelers.

As you near the end of Clover Hill Road, there’s this wide grassy spot carved out by farmers back in the day. You might even spot bits and pieces of an old farmhouse nearby.

Heading towards Rainbow Falls, the greenery gets thicker, with ferns, plants, and leaves making the surroundings more lush and vibrant.

At this point, you’ll need to find an entrance to a narrow trail on the right leading to Macquarie Rivulet and start walking towards the first waterfall.

In its last stretch, the track becomes narrow, slippery, and muddy as it descends to the Rainbow Falls.

Rainbow Falls

Upon reaching Rainbow Falls, you’ll see a beautiful multi-level waterfall visible from both above and below.

If you venture closer to the edge for photos, take care—the rocks can be quite slippery.

Descending to the bottom of Rainbow Falls is also an option, but it involves a steep climb that I decided to skip.

Mulangong Falls

Once you hit the riverbank, heading upstream is where the real off-trail excitement begins!

Don’t count on many markers showing the way, maybe a few ribbons here and there, but those won’t be much help.

Here’s a useful hint for navigating this area:

Keep that riverbank in your sight and don’t wander too deep into the bush!

You’d think following the stream would be a breeze, right?

Well, not exactly! It’s a bit of a puzzle with massive boulders blocking the way, making you dodge and weave off the river path more often than not.

Rewarding Finale: Clover Falls

As me and my girlfriend hiked along, making our way through the dense forest and around those massive boulders, we unexpectedly reached a break in the path, and the sound of gushing water began to intensify.

Yep, that was Clover Falls announcing its presence, and let me tell you, it’s a sight to behold!

Now, here’s the coolest part – when we finally got there, we were super lucky—just the two of us, no one else around. It was like our private hideaway!

After all that hiking, seeing that peaceful spot was something else. We took a breather and even went for a dip.

Clover Falls isn’t just any waterfall; it’s like a secret haven rewarding those who dared to push through the trail.

After all, isn’t discovering hidden gems like this what hiking’s all about?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

How long does the trail take?

  • 3-4 hours or longer if you are planning to take a lots of photos or go for a dip.

What about signage and trail quality?

  • There are no trail signs. The path to Rainbow Falls is relatively easy to follow. All sections after Rainbow Falls towards the other waterfalls are unmarked.

How difficult is the trail?

  • Up to Rainbow Falls I would rate it easy. After Rainbow Falls moderate to hard due to creek crossings, steep sections, dense bush, and less defined trails. Recommended for intermediate to experienced hikers.

What should I wear?

  • Hiking boots or even sneakers for the first part up to Rainbow Falls should be fine. For the second section I would recommend good hiking shoes or boots with a good grip. Long pants and decent hiking socks are also recommended.

What essentials should I carry?

  • Water, sunscreen, hat, snacks, and insect repellent.

Is it the trail child-friendly?

  • Yes, suitable for kids 12+. Caution around cliff edges and slippery slopes is advised. However, I wouldn’t recommend second part of the trail from Rainbow Falls to Clover Falls to children.

Is the trail wheelchair accessible?

  • No wheelchair access is available on the trail.

Can I swim on the trail?

  • Yes, Mullangong Falls and Clover Falls offer swimming spots.

When is the best time to visit?

  • It is totally up to you. Warmer months would be ideal for swimming but attract more visitors. Not recommended directly after heavy rain due to flooding and mud.

Is there phone service?

  • There is very limited phone service within Macquarie Pass National Park.

Can I bring my dog?

  • Pets, except certified assistance animals, aren’t allowed.
